From 1st December RIBSA will not accept entries from players with
outstanding entry fees.
All outstanding monies must be paid in full to either a Committee Member
or to the office by credit or laser card before entry can be accepted.
If a player is in any doubt whether fees are outstanding, they should contact
the office in advance of the closing date so as to ensure outstanding monies
are received to guarantee entry in to the relevant tournament.
Having spoken to a number of players at the last Ranking
Tournament, the Committee has decided to change the
schedule of matches for the next Senior Ranking Tournament.
So as not to have any player in the venue all day, we will divide the competition into two halves.
The top half of the draw will start at 10am and continue to approximately 3.30pm. By then, we should have qualified eight
players for the Last 16 at 9.30am on Sunday.
The bottom half of the draw will start at 3.30pm on Saturday
and play until we have the remaining eight qualifiers for the Last
16 on Sunday at 9.30am.
Matches will be played on a roll on - roll off basis. Times will be
allocated for each session.
Players must be in the venue at their allocated match time.

The annual Billiards International Trophy Tournament took place at the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club, Carlow on Saturday, Sunday, 22nd and 23rd November.
This year it was the turn of the Republic of Ireland to be the
host nation and it was very rewarding to welcome the many visitors who
travelled with the visiting teams and generated a marvellous atmosphere throughout the weekend.
The format of the tournament was that each contesting nation, the Republic of Ireland, Austria, England and Northern Ireland put forward a six-man team to contest against each other in two segments, a 90 minute timed game,
which counted 2 points per game and two sets of 150 up, with 1 point
awarded for each set.
Action got under way at 11.00am on Saturday in the timed format.
Ireland made a great start in their match against Austria, taking the session by 12-0. England also made a very good start to their tournament in their match against Northern Ireland, the result going to England 10-2. Ireland then met England in the 2 x 150 format, where points were shared 6-6. Northern
Ireland had a very good second session match against Austria, finishing
with a clean-sweep 12-0 result in favour of the North.
In the final timed session of Saturday’s schedule England had a clean-sweep victory over Austria while the Ireland v Northern Ireland match
finished 8-4 in favour of the Republic.
Action continued on Sunday with the first of two 2 x 150 format matches.
England shared points in their match against Northern Ireland while the
Republic just took the edge in their match with Austria, scoring 7 points
against Austria’s 5. Next came the timed matches where Northern Ireland
had a clean-sweep result over Austria and England took their match
against the Republic 8-4.
By the end of the second session on Sunday, England, already ahead in
points and with Austria as opponents in their final match, looked to have
done enough to establish an unassailable position as leaders and
eventual winners. This proved to be the case, which they sealed with a 12-0 victory in their final session against Austria.
At the start of the final session, with England almost certainly secure winners, attention switched to the runner-up position between Ireland and Northern Ireland. This culminated in a thrilling 150 up between Phil Martin for
the Republic against Darren Dornan for the North. As the various 150 up
games finished out, this was the last game still in play, with both sides
needing the final available point to secure second place. With so much
focus on the game, it was only natural that nerves crept in for both players,
each either over-hitting or under-hitting in turn and missing some fairly elementary shots. In the end, Phil held his nerve to win the game, thus
gaining the final point for the Republic and relegating
Northern Ireland into third place.
Results, of course, tell only half the story. What they cannot convey is
the buzzing atmosphere of the occasion and the excellent standard of play.
The tournament also produced its quota of high breaks, with more than
sixty half centuries and nine century breaks, the most notable of which
were a 153 by Billy Bousfield of England and unfinished breaks of 128
and 117 by Rob Hall of England and Stephen Brown of Northern Ireland respectively. Ireland also had its share of century breaks, 104 by
Eugene Hughes and 119 by James Moore. Congratulations to them
and to all the participants who contributed to a most successful event.
Our thanks are due to the EABA Referees and referees who travelled from Austria and from all over Ireland, all of whom gave unstintingly of their
time with referee and scorekeeping duties throughout the weekend.
A special word of thanks is also due to Clive Scott, whose experience in tournament direction ensured an efficient and smoothly run event.
The Ivy Rooms Snooker Centre are to be congratulated for their preparations
for the event and for the excellent playing conditions they provided.
It was a great pleasure to see so many skilled exponents of the beautiful
game of Billiards in simultaneous action and our congratulations must go to the England team on their convincing victory.
The format of the event presents an excellent opportunity to renew friendships and enjoy the atmosphere of the occasion and the weekend this
year at Carlow was no exception.

Sunday saw the running of the third west of Ireland Snooker Open event which took place in Caesars palace snooker club in Galway.
The event attracted a quality entry to include current Irish number 1 Mario Fernazez and number 2 John Torpey, defending champion David Hogan ,
Shannon west of Ireland champion Leonard Shanahan , inform
Dublin player George Tierney and of course everyone was looking forward
to see Galway’s Irish Champion Vinny Muldoon who has had such a fantastic
start to his professional career on the WPBSA tour .
In total 40 players started the event with many close matches in the first
couple of round. Vinny muldoon was the first of the favourites to fall when
losing to local player Shane o Hara in the second round, Vinny was the only
player to start off a handicap of minus 21 because of his pro status and O’ Hara battled all the way and won the match on the blue in the final frame.
The quarter finals saw David Hogan beat John Lynch 3-0 and John Torpey
beating Sean Conway 3-1. Shane o Hara pushed George Tierney all the
way to a deciding frame but Tierney showed his class in the deciding frame
with breaks of 40 and 73 to proceed to the semis.
Mario Fernandez went 2 frames up including a respotted black against Leonard only for Lenny to battle hard and win a great match 3-2 and knock out most peoples favourite to take the title,
Both semis went to deciding frames with David Hogan battling back
from 2 frames down only for George to knock in a super 85 break
.
The other semi saw John Torpey go two frames up with Lenny battling
back to a deciding frame for the third time in four matches.
An excellent 50 break and some good safety play saw Lenny progress
through to the final with George.
The final was a bit of a scrappy affair with the long day taking its toll
and both players struggled to flow. Lenny went 2 frames up but george
then dug deep to level and won the fifth frame with a decent break to go one frame away from the title.
The come back kid from Shannon had no intention of falling at that stage
and took the next frame to once again set up another deciding frame shootout.
The final frame was a tense affair with both players missing chances to
finish but eventually it was Lenny who potted a long brown to leave an easy
blue to take his second West of Ireland title in a row.
The West of Ireland events were oringally started with the intention of
getting a few extra events for players from Galway , Shannon and Limerick
but we are delighted and would like to thank all those who travelled from
Dublin ,Mayo,Sligo and Tipperary and contributed to make Sunday the great enjoyable day it was for all involved.
These events pay out 100% of the entry fee so we would like to thank
Mr Colm Harty for the free use of the club for the day and a special thanks to Benny Fahy and the team at Caesars palace for having the club and tables
in top shape as usual for the day.

Premier League; This week the North West A team were away to
Shantallow House A who are league leaders. The A team were not daunted
by the task in hand as Pat Bonnar took to the table first against Joey Porter
and they shared the frames1/1.
Next up was Anthony Bonnar and his opponent was Owen Mc Laughlin.
Anthony took the first with a 35 clearance and never looked back as he also
took the next frame to win 2/0. Brian Mc Aleer followed Anthony’s footsteps
as he took the next two frames with breaks of 38,35 and 44 to defeat his opponent Peter Doherty. The North West A team has two games in hand so are looking good to take their place at the top of the table in due course.
The North West B team were at home to Shantallow B. Paul Doherty was
first up against Paul Mc Callion and he got off to a great start with a win
of 2/0. Gerry mc Keever was up next with Stephen Brady and he also won
his match 2/0. Paul Gallagher was last up but he lost his two frames to
Billy Mc Connell.
The overall score for the match was 4/2 to the North West B team.

Karl Fitzpatrick from the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club Carlow won the Leinster
Under 20 Snooker Open in the Q Club Wicklow over the weekend
Karl beat Dane Daly 3 frames to 1 in the Final

This weekend saw the first of this year’s new Donegal Senior singles
tournaments which was held at the North West Snooker Club Letterkenny.
There was a good entry with 22 players turning up on the day, some as young
as 11 year old’s Padraig Mc Aleer and Adam Bonnar.
The tournament was handicapped which gave everyone an even chance to
take the spoils. Eight players were seeded from last season
This gave us a line up of Chris Gibbons against Gerry Mc Keever,
Brian Mc Aleer against Phelim Mc Clafferty, Anthony Bonnar against hi
s brother Pat, and Paul Doherty against John White.
The first match went against the seeding’s with Gerry Mc Keever taking
the match 3/1 as he knocked out the Number one seed Chris Gibbons.
The second match also went against the seeding’s with Brian Mc Aleer
having a 3/0 victory over Phelim Mc Clafferty. The third match saw
Anthony Bonnar beat Pat Bonnar 3/0, and the final match went to John
White who scraped past Paul Doherty in a 3/2 victory.
The semi final saw Gerry Mc Keever, who was playing his best snooker
of the season dispose of his club-mate Brian Mc Aleer in a
thrilling 3/2 victory.
The other eagerly anticipated match between Anthony Bonnar and John
White lived up to its expectations with Anthony proving his seeding with
a hard earned victory 3/2.
This set up a final between underdog Gerry Mc Keever and seven
times Donegal Champion Anthony Bonnar.
As the game progressed Anthony’s experience came to the fore, and Gerry seemed to tire after all the tight matches he had during the long day. Anthony eased his way through the final with a 3/0 victory.
This is the first in a series of 6 Donegal Senior tournaments planned for this season and Anthony Bonnar will top the ladder heading into the second tournament which is set for the 7th of December.
COACHING; Junior coaching which is in it’s ninth week and is drawing
more and more young players every week and it is on from 5.30 to 7.30
every Friday and will continue again this week and all are welcome between
the age of 10 and 18 years.

The 2nd senior ranking billiards tournament was held at the Ivy Rooms,
Carlow on Sunday 19th October.
Due to the small number of entries there was a preliminary match between
James Moore and Aonghus McAnally.
James started the day’s play in fine form by making a break of 106 in this
match and it proved to be the best break of the tournament.
The quarter finals paired James against Larry Drennan in a very close
contested battle, and after 90 minutes the winner was James by the
score of [341 to 320].
Robert McCrum played Victor 0' Gorman in his quarter final match and on
the day Robert played very steady and finished in quick style by the
score of [400 to 225]
Tom Kearns was victorious in his match against Phil Martin and
reached the magic score of 400 before Phil [400 to 345]. In the last of the quarter finals Joe Doheny managed to get over the winning line first against
Liam Byrne and it was very tit for tat to the end. [400 to 386].
In the semi finals James played Robert and again James proved with all his experience how to never give up till the fat lady sings - the match started with little scoring from both players and after about 20 minutes play Robert made a break of 56 so with his handicap he now went ahead of James by nearly
300 points, James however appeared to dominate the match from then and
after almost 90 minutes the match concluded with the score at [400 to 382].
In the other semi final Joe played Tom in an extremely well contested match
but it was Joe that finished the strongest in the end [400 to 317]
The final was between James Moore and Joe Doheny as on so many occasions
in the past these two players have dueled.
The match was very close with very little separating both players until James produced a very nice 103 break and it helped him home even though Joe kept
the pressure on till the very last, bad luck Joe and
well done James [400 to 375].
The plate competition final was played between Aonghus McAnally and Liam Byrne, and it ended with Liam winning by the score [400 to 350]
Because Brendan Devlin was unavailable on the day Robert McCrum with the
help of James Moore looked after the procedures.
Thanks once again to Marian and her staff at the Ivy Rooms

The Venetian Club hosted the 2008 limerick Intermediate Championship
on Sunday Nov 2nd.
The entry included all of the top Intermediate limerick players and produced
some great matches throughout the day.
One of the big highlights of the first round was the return to action of Johnny Cronin, Johnny is an ex Irish International and Irish number one and there
was great interest in his first appearance in over 8 years. Johnny showed
flashes of his old form but he had a tough draw and lost narrowly 3-1 to
Philip Burke.
Highlight from the first 2 rounds was young Kevin O Callaghan who was
making his first appearance in Championship snooker and impressed
before losing out to Trevor Hayes.
In a fitting final between the 2 best players on the day Mike took his chances
very well in the first frame to go 1-0 up and he lead by 58 points with 4
reads remaining in the 2nd, but Neil produced one of the best clearances of
this or any tournament to level the frame and force a respotted black.
After all Neils hard work Mike then potted a tremendous black to go 2-0 up.
The last 2 frames were tense scrappy affairs, which are typical when there
is so much at stake, Neil took the 3rd, but Mike prevailed in the fourth to
take the trophy and title. Well done Mike and Neil and all players
Thanks to The Venetian Club for providing excellent facilities all day.

Waters Wins Limerick Ranking Event NO.1

Jason Waters continued his fine start to the season by winning
the 1St Event of the Limerick Master Ranking Series held in the The Venetian Club on Sunday.
In the final Jason defeated Neil Madigan and it was fitting that these 2 players reached the decider as they were the form players all day.
Neil won all his group matches only dropping one frame and he
continued that form in the knock out stages with win a good win over Mario Fernandez in the semi’s
Jason had closer matches in the knock out stages, beating
Kevin Mc Mahon and Frank Sarsfield by the odd frame.
Frank Sarsfield showed very good form and it just shows how
tough the handicap system can be when he hit breaks of 75, 72 and 56 and still lost 2-1 to newcomer Mike Pearson.

This is the first of a 6 event series, designed to provide competitive match practice for all players, and overall a good days snooker
was had by all, thanks to The Venetian club owner Patrick Bird who provided the trophy and a reduced rate for the day for this event.
