The 5th Senior
Event of the season was won by
Carlow's own Colvin O'Brien who
came through the field to win his
first ever senior ranking event on
Sunday beating Wexford's Joe
Delaney 5-4 in the final. The top
seed's fell like flies on Saturday
in a day of upsets but come Sunday
morning Colvin was the man in form
as he defeated Dublin's George
O'Hara and Kilkenny's John
O'Sullivan to reach the final.
Saturday's upsets started with
the defeat of No.2 seed Vincent
Muldoon at the hands of Niel
Madigan but it did not stop there.
Soon after No.4 seed Carl Murphy
had exited the event and come the
Last 16 that night we saw Robert
Murphy, Martin McCrudden, David
Hogan and Brendan O'Donoghue all
fall by the wayside. Indeed it was
O'Brien who produced a great
clearance to defeat the No.1 seed
Hogan to reach the quarter finals.
With all the top players exiting at
nearly the same stage the overall
rankings won't be disturbed that
much with Hogan now 2 points ahead
of O'Donoghue and 3 ahead of
Muldoon as we enter the last senior
before the Irish Championships.
The weekend however belonged to
O'Brien who held his nerve in two
tough 4-3 matches to see off George
O'Hara and then John O'Sullivan to
reach the final where he then came
back from 3-1 down at one stage to
win the event in the final
frame.
One noticeable performance this
weekend was that of 16 year old
Sean Conway who played some superb
snooker to reach the quarter finals
and should have probably gone on
further. The current World Under-21
Pool Champion had some excellent
victories to reach the quarters
including wins over Tom O'Driscoll,
Clinton Franey, Nigel Power and
George Tierney.
