Muldoon soars to No.1 in Rankings

Posted by The Administrator on March 10 2008

Vincent Muldoon reached the No.1 spot in the Irish Rankings for the very first time on Sunday after beating Colm Gilcreest 5-3 in the final of the 6th event of the season. Muldoon now leads Colm and Brendan O'Donoghue by only one point going into the championships with David Hogan still only two points behind after his early defeat.

The 6th Senior Event of the season saw yet again a number of surprise results none more than the early defeat of No.1 seed David Hogan. Hogan had earlier come out on top of his encounter with Waterford's Joe Corrigan. Corrigan played some superb snooker which included a 113 in the first frame but could not close out the match with Hogan eventually coming back from 2-1 down to win 3-2. He could not however make it two comebacks in a row and despite coming back from 2-0 down against Mark Maher he lost out 3-2 after an inspired 40+ clearance from Maher to win the decider.

Hogan's exit alerted the top seeds and they all made it through to the quarters come Sunday morning although Muldoon had to overcome TJ Dowling in the Last 32. TJ made a comeback for this event and ran Muldoon all the way in a brilliant match before Muldoon ran out the victor.

Sunday morning saw Maher Maher reach his second semi final in a row seing off the winner of the last event, Colvin O'Brien 4-0. Maher however despite having nearly gone 3-0 up on Colm Gilcreest in the semi eventually lost 4-2 ending his event. Colm had played superb all weekend and had beaten Martin McCrudden 4-0 to reach the semi.

The other half of the draw saw Brendan see off John Torpey 4-1 while Muldoon had no problem beating Carl Murphy by four frame to nil. The semi was touch and go for a while until Muldoon eventually got over the winning line in what was a nervy match for both players with so much at stake.

The final was a superb one with both players in terrific form. Gilcreest opened up with a 45 in the first. Muldoon started the second well with 8 blacks but Gilcreest when looking like clearing up missed the last black no 44 and Muldoon cleared to level. Gilcreest had a 57 in the next only for Muldoon to knock in a 74 to level proceedings once more. A superb 89 and 68 gave Muldoon a 4-2 lead only for Colm to claw one back with a 78 but could not stop Muldoon closing out the match in the 8th frame to win 5-3.
